And I have to say the former situation is so much BETTER...not just the day of, but for days (and months) after. I don't beat myself up for things I "should've" done, or the day that I "should've" had. I hope you're still celebrating the fact that you finished a marathon with a smile, an intact body, and the satisfaction of accomplishing your goals! And great photos...Beautiful run on a beautiful day! And great photos, love your "bounding over the finish line" shot. 3:53 on a warm day when you're not yet where you want to be fitness-wise? You should've taken one more victory lap around Hayward Field. I'll say it again here, I think the first marathon you're able to train for & run fully healthy is the first marathon where you qualify for Boston (assuming you don't choose Pikes Peak) — it's a matter of "when", not "if". And now I wish I'd run Eugene rather than Portland...

Hope the singlet wasn't responsible for any of those chafed bloody places! #eekAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04760107992875755916noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8576247921509925121.post-19982465817500190942016-05-04T19:22:29.044-07:002016-05-04T19:22:29.044-07:00You look so happy in the photos! I really wish every runner could experience the feeling of "I'm going to have some fun because I get to do this," and now you've done it. (Another friend of mine, who is VERY goal/reward-oriented, just did that at Boston and enjoyed the hell out of it for once.) Of course, running every race for fun could start to seem like a waste of money and hoopla, but I really believe we all need to realize that we GET TO RUN. It's kind of like how we GET TO LIVE. And in the process, maybe you inspired that group of teenagers to run.

Being able to run a 3:53 marathon in the heat is a pretty good indication that you're not so out of shape as you think. And your race report was so fun to read, so that's a bonus for us readers. You did a great job at fighting the mental battle, and now you've got 26 miles of that fight in your arsenal for your next marathon. I call that a success.
Laylahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14289344501168317316noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8576247921509925121.post-63749739806432943222016-05-04T10:38:41.982-07:002016-05-04T10:38:41.982-07:00Great run! This was a really nice reminder that racing is hard; feeling excited and strong is relative, and being able to place yourself outside of your own expectations or experiences or historical performances is harder still. I've been slowly allowing my brain to be excited about the marathon distance again after some setbacks, and this was really fun to read! :) Eugene has always been a bit of a "hmm maybe..." race for me; what did you think of the actual course/set-up?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8576247921509925121.post-28780513276110172992016-05-04T08:01:29.325-07:002016-05-04T08:01:29.325-07:00I had so much fun reading this. Did you figure out what was causing the fatigue, or was it just work/life stress?

If you've ever read Walter Mischel's The Marshmallow Test, he talks about executive function and self-control strategies that kids use to succeed - and among those strategies is pre-planning: 'if this happens, then I will do that' . (Which I guess is to say that you are a successful four-year-old for employing those mental strategies!)
